英语与汉语的表达习惯存在很多差异，名词的重复与代称就是其中重要的一条。总的来说，汉语中重复使用某个词语的情况比较多，而英语不习惯重复，如果需要重复某个词语，常常用代词代替。因此汉译英时要尽量避免重复，英译汉时要少用代词，多用实词。例如：

     The canals were arteries of communication: they were not made to carry pleasure boats, but barges.

     运河是交通的动脉，开运河不是为了走游艇，而是为了通行驳船。

     有时候英语中为了避免重复，也不一定用代词，而是用名词，只是为了换一种说法。例如：

     哈佛是最早接受中国留学生的美国大学之一。中国教育界、科学界、文化界一直与哈佛大学保持着学术交流。

Harvard is among the first American universities to accept Chinese students. The Chinese educational, scientific and cultural communities have all along maintained academic exchanges with this university.

英语当中有时会采用部分重复的方法来减少重复。例如：

     五四运动是在当时世界革命号召之下，是在俄国革命号召之下，是在列宁号召之下发生的。

     The May 4th Movement came into being at the call of the world revolution, of the Russian Revolution and of Len.
